"Island in the Sun"

Below are the “Island in the Sun” lyrics.  I always associate this song with  my location - the island Barbados.  If you wish, you can listen to the music of "Island in the Sun" as I have placed it there in a separate window for you.

This tune was written by Harry Belafonte and Irving Burgess (Lord Burgess is his stage name) and became a Billboard hit for Harry Belafonte who has produced some of the most beautiful of the Caribbean songs. The music was transcribed by Ronald E. Hontz and the words reproduced through 2003 LyricsDepot.com.    Some browsers do not support the playing of MIDIS and if yours does not, it is possible that you may already have heard the tune "Island in the Sun".

Lord Burgess is well  known to most Barbadians as the writer of the lyrics for the National Anthem of Barbados. Irving Burgess, although born in the U.S.A. had a Barbadian mother and he has instituted a Literary Award for Barbadian school children.

Although Harry Belafonte was born in America, his mother was a Jamaican and Harry spent several years of his childhood in Jamaica where he would have been exposed to calypso music, and also to the heritage and culture of the Caribbean islands.  The islands were noted for the fields of sugar cane, slavery, the beauty of the sea, and  the fishing boats. In today's world, there are all kinds of pleasure boats, as well as fishing boats, as the islands are marketed as  tourist destinations.

Some of these Caribbean islands no longer grow sugar cane.  Barbados still has cane fields but a lot of its landscape has rapidly changed and buildings have replaced vegetation.

This is my island in the sun
Where my people have toiled since time begun
I may sail on many a sea
Her shores will always be home to me

CHORUS
Oh, island in the sun
Willed to me by my father's hand
All my days I will sing in praise
Of your forest, waters, your shining sand

As morning breaks the heaven on high
I lift my heavy load to the sky
Sun comes down with a burning glow
Mingles my sweat with the earth below

CHORUS

I see woman on bended knee
Cutting cane for her family
I see man at the waterside
Casting nets at the surging tide

CHORUS

I pray the day will never come
When I can't awake to the sound of drum
Never let me miss carnival
With calypso songs philosophical
