About Me

Calliope is my kennel prefix.

I've had Bouviers for approximately 15 years.

My Bouviers compete in conformation, obedience, and agility.

To me they are a fun-loving breed, sensitive, very intelligent and protective.

The Bouvier Des Flandres

This breed originated in Europe, in an area known as Flandres, which would be a part of Belgium, France, and Holland.

Here, they were used mainly as guards over the farmers' property, and that property included the stock, his family and home.  They were also used to herd the stock and  to pull milk carts in Holland.

During the Wars, the Bouvier did his share of military duty where he was used as an ambulance helper, and messenger.

From there, he has been used in the Police Service and for guarding commercial organisations.  But this is a breed that is also used by the blind as a guide dog,  and as a baby-sitter who "herds" young children to safety and is an excellent guardian and companion. Today, the Bouvier competes and does well  in many sports such as agility and  herding,

The Bouvier is a long coated dog whose coat should be combed at least once a week and certainly after a romp in grounds where the coat can get all kinds of attachments stuck in it.  He should get a hair cut several times a year.  For showing, the Bouvier needs to be specially groomed and constant attention given to his coat and to trimming it. He has a double coat and in combing, and brushing, the thin undercoat comes out.

The Bouvier is an independent breed who learns quickly and easily and whose training and socialising should start from a young puppy. And training should be fun, using motivational methods, so it is enjoyable.

To date, I am the only person in Barbados who breeds Bouviers and I usually breed only when I am planning to keep a puppy from the litter.
