Each breed has special
characteristics for which it is noted. Although a Bouvier in
the show ring may never have been used for herding, a judge
watching a Bouv. move in the ring, should expect to see a
free, proud and bold gait. The judge should know that
this breed was used for herding cattle and was also used for
guarding. The dog in the ring today should still be seen as
capable of doing the function for which it was breed many
generations ago.

Some judges, after checking the bite, to
ensure that the Bouvier's teeth form a scissor type bite, then
hold the Bouvier's face and look closely at the eyes.
The Bouvier's eyes should be bold and alert,
typical of a breed which is resolute and fearless. I love
when judges do that with my Bouviers and my Bouviers look
back at the judges with their dark brown eyes with a steady,
fearless stare.

Over here, we are in the tropics, so I am
always conscious of running a Bouvier, with a black brindle coat
at that, in the very hot sun.
I find the Bouviers do fine but I always
have them in a lot of shade before they enter the ring and after
the ring. Our shows usually have tents for exhibitors and
spectators. It is nice to see the outfits at Westminister or
Crufts but shows in Barbados are very casual and most of us will
dress in shorts and t-shirts.
